Mukat Singh, the founder of the Amarpurkashi Project, finding that earlier promises of action given by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate [SDM] in Bilari were not being fulfilled and he was not answering calls, decided to fast against pollution.
The fast was to start outside the offices of the Sub Divisional Magistrate, Bilari, on the morning of February 12th and finish at 7pm on Monday 14th February. If no response had come from the SDM by 7pm on Monday, the fast was to continue on Tuesday.
Thirty-three people joined Mukat in the fast and things began to move. The SDM contacted the local branch of the Pollution Control Board [PCB] in Moradabad and asked them to send a representative to discuss the pollution.
The SDM Bilari invited Mukat Singh and six of those taking part in the fast to his office where Mr KK Srivastava, the Asst. Engineer and Mr Umesh Shukla, the Asst. Scientific Officer from the Regional Office of the U P Pollution Control Board office in Moradabad, were present to discuss the proposed suggestions.
Mukat and the others presented a paper outlining twelve proposals for dealing with the pollution.
All were agreed so Mukat and his supporters agreed to halt the fast.
